Since we launched RenderStreet we planned to directly back up the Blender development effort, and at this moment we are in the position to do it. We subscribed to Blender Foundation’s Development Fund in order to help Blender developers keep working on an open source project that relies on the community’s help. The Fund also allows Blender Foundation to collaborate with the best Blender coders out there and make sure the project keeps growing.
The process is very transparent and the Foundation gives constant reports about how the money is spent, what features are being deployed and who is responsible for what. In 2014, three grants have already been awarded:
March 2014 – April 2014
- Grant for Dalai Felinto: finishing work on MultiView (stereo render)
- Grant for Bastien Montagne, Full time work on game-artist related topics (like FBX) and general Blender support. (Valve donation)
April 2014 – June 2014
- Grant for Tamito Kajiyama, for full-time work on FreeStyle and NPR rendering in Blender.
If you are considering helping out Blender, the process is very simple, go to the Development Fund page and choose an amount (between 5€ and 250€ per month) to support an open source project.
Also, we encourage our users to make a donation to Gooseberry project, Blender Foundation’s first open source animation feature film. It’s a high stake goal aiming for 10,000 backers, but we believe it can be done. Plus, each subscription gives you access to the Blender Cloud, where you can also find data about the Foundation’s previous movies and training videos. We already subscribed, so please join the effort make Gooseberry happen!
