We are aware that, for some of you, the way the uploads worked on RenderStreet was less than optimal. When we originally conceived the user interface for RenderStreet, we were of the opinion that FTP support is a thing of the past, something that has to do with the way the internet worked in its initial days, when the web was not so advanced as it is now.
Since launching the site, we have received feedback from some of our customers that FTP uploads are still a desirable thing to have. There are a couple usage patterns that have been reported as not working properly using the normal HTTP uploads: slow connection speeds and very large files.
While we do support very large file uploads via HTTP, the main issue with it is the lack of resume support for the uploads. That means that, if the connection to the server breaks, you’ll need to upload the file again. Which is less than optimal for slow connection speeds, or for large files, even on better connections.
We acknowledge that for the scenarios above the FTP upload is a better solution, simply because it allows to upload the files with resume support. So we added support for this on our site as well. You can see this in the “new project” page, where we added now the option to select one of the files previously uploaded via FTP.
