12 minutes animation Whole, sponsored from our RenderStreet for Artists Program, had its official release in Copenhagen. William Reynish directed Whole as his bachelor film project for The National Film School of Denmark. He applied for rendering with RenderStreet in November, and now the movie is hitting major festivals internationally.
The psychedelic 3D short tells the story of a broken hearted girl named Mira left with a hole in her belly, on a metaphoric journey to recover her inner self. Whole is currently featured only in film festivals, but will be released as an open project, with all assets used for creating the movie available for download. Here’s the official trailer:
Whole was rendered with Cycles and the cumulated render time for the entire movie totaled 4 server-months. The actual render time was significantly shorter, as the project had access to 50 servers on our farm.
“We made extensive use of new Cycles features, including subsurface scattering and volumetrics. The film is also stereoscopic, using 3D glasses to create a hypnotic trance sequence!” – William Reynish, Whole Director
Before directing his own movie, William worked with the Sintel team in shaping the personalities in the movie and was also involved in the Big Buck Bunny as a character animator.
Later edit: We have some exciting updates about directing and producing Whole on the way, with William disclosing the project in a future interview on our blog.
